The Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2009 State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates report reveals that West Virginia employs 17,340 registered nurses with a mean annual salary of $53,030. Morgantown, West Virginia is one of the five metropolitan areas with the highest concentration of licensed practical and vocational nurses (annual mean salary $57,180). To work in the state, nursing graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX). Luckily for nursing students, job prospects in the state are expected to be good. In 2008, The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation endowed a $150,000 grant for the further education of nurses in West Virginia in order to deal with the state’s impending nursing shortage.
