Overview

Perhaps most famous today for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500, Indiana once figured prominently in the frontier wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Today, the state’s northern region along the shore of Lake Michigan is an industrial center while much of the rest of the state is devoted to agriculture. The nursing shortage has hit Indiana as has the lack of full-time nursing faculty.

Nursing Education in Indiana

Indiana offers nearly 40 nursing schools with several options for graduate study. The state’s shortage of nursing faculty; however, may cause qualified applicants to be turned away. Most of the scholarships for Indiana nursing students are administered through Indiana State University and are frequently only available to students at that school. There are some scholarships offered through independent organizations as well..

Outlook for Nursing in Indiana

Most states have a shortage of nurses. Indiana, however, has a serious shortage of nurses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010 edition. RNs working in the state can expect to earn a mean hourly wage of a little more than $27.00.
