There are about 6,000 RNs in Vermont, according to the U.S. Bureau for Labor Statistics. And even though RNs hold about 2.6 million jobs nationally, the National League for Nursing (NLN) predicts an ongoing shortage of registered nurses. Faculty shortages and insufficient clinical settings are major factors leading to this shortage.

Vermont's Blue Ribbon Commission on Nursing was formed in 2011 to examine nursing workforce issues in the state, such as current and future supply along with the demand for nursing services. About 40 percent of qualified applicants to pre-licensure programs are turned away nationally each year. Admission for RNs seeking to move to a BSN degree may be somewhat less difficult as less clinical time is required and many programs offer online options. In fact, an NLN study found that one of ten RN to BSN programs had unfilled openings.

Schools to Consider

  • Norwich University (Northfield). The nursing programs can be finished in two years. Most of the sessions are classroom-based and include topics such as nursing in today's world and nursing research. Classes such as the nurse's role in health promotion and protection require clinical time at one of the university's many clinical partners (hospitals, rehab, and home care).
  • University of Vermont (Burlington). Students move through the program in cohorts. One nursing course is offered each semester. Most students complete the program in three years with a five-year option available. All but one of the nursing courses are offered through distance learning. Health assessment is provided on campus as a one-week intensive summer course.
  • Walden University (Minneapolis). This is a flexible, evidence-based online program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Nursing classes may be completed in as little as 18 months. Courses include public and global health, information management, and leadership competencies in nursing and health care.
