According to the Tennessee Board of Nursing, about 79,025 RNs hold Tennessee licenses. And as in so many other states, Tennessee RNs have a lot to think about. The Tennessee Center for Nursing says 800,000 more RNs will be needed in the U.S. by 2020, and that Tennessee is expected to have the most severe shortage of 16 southern states. While the RN shortage in the U.S. overall will be 30 percent by 2020, Tennessee will be short nearly 50 percent of needed RNs.

Yet each semester, nursing schools around the nation are forced to turn away qualified applicants to RN programs. The Tennessee Center for Nursing cites a critical need for funding and faculty for nursing schools. Take a look at some of the programs available to Tennessee nurses.

Programs to consider:

• Austin Peay State University (Clarksville). Most of the nursing classes in Austin Peay's RN to BSN program can be completed online. A full-time student may complete them in three semesters; part-time study is also possible. Clinical time for the courses on community and public health nursing, and clinical integration may be individualized and self-paced.
• Baptist Memorial College of Health Sciences (Memphis). Course offerings for the RN to BSN degree are flexible. Classes are provided through a hybrid model that includes online options. A full-time student may complete nursing classes in 12 months, but the curriculum can be stretched to two years according to a student's needs. One lab and two clinical courses are required.
• Tennessee State University (Nashville). TSU's career mobility RN to BSN program may be completed in 12 months. Flexible classes are offered in a variety of formats including online, traditional classroom, live video, and web-enhancement. Transfer and experiential credit is awarded, but 30 hours of nursing credits must be taken at TSU.
