According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing about 50 percent of practicing RNs have a BSN degree or higher. Enrollment in RN to BSN programs has steadily increased over the past eight years. Rhode Island's 12,430 RNs can select from a number of traditional and online programs in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Rhode Island is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact which allows Rhode Island licensed RNs to practice in about two dozen states across the nation.
Programs to consider:
- Salve Regina University. (Newport). Salve Regina grants a number of credits to those entering the degree completion track for prior educational preparation and experience. Students must complete a minimum of 36 credits at the university. Program offerings include classes in ethical challenges of nursing and holistic health assessment.
- Rhode Island College of Nursing. (Providence). Course scheduling is flexible with classes offered on weekdays and evenings. Transfer credits are awarded for previous courses in nursing and general education. Students must complete 45 semester hours at RIC, including classes in public and community health nursing, and contemporary nursing practice.
- University of Massachusetts Boston. With this online program, students have the option to visit the Boston campus if they wish. Students are admitted three times a year, with five online courses to select from each semester. Successful completion of the Writing Proficiency requirement is part of the curriculum. Monthly informational sessions are held on campus.
