Some Georgia nurses are returning to school for a BSN degree. According to a 2010 report to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, just over 31 percent of Georgia RNs enter practice with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Over 15 percent of active Georgia RNs returned to school to complete a BSN degree after initial licensure, though, and an additional 13 percent plan to complete a BSN in the future.

The push toward a BSN is a practical matter for most Georgia nurses. It's become increasingly common to see the phrases "BSN required" or "BSN preferred" in help wanted ads for nurses. BSN nurses also typically earn more than their ADN counterparts. According to Payscale.com, the median salary for a BSN nurse with one to five years of experience was $65,516 in 2011.

RN to BSN programs for Georgia nurses include:

  • Georgia Southern University. The RN to BSN program at Georgia Southern is completely online. Students may elect to attend an on-campus orientation program and some one-day on-campus classes, but if on-campus attendance is not feasible, students may complete another pre-approved alternative instead.
  • Macon State College. Macon State College's BSN completion program includes upper level courses in community health, pathopharmacology and nursing leadership and management. The program is designed for working ADN and diploma nurse grads.
  • Valdosta State University. Valdosta State offers an RN Preference program, which allows nurses to complete some basic coursework before deciding if they want to pursue a BSN (which can be completed in one year) or a MSN degree (which can be completed in two years). Advisors work with students to determine their personal and professional goals.
