New York state has one of the highest concentrations of NPs in the nation, with 8,990 nurse practitioners in practice (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012). Though there are many NPs in the state, there is still room for more, as healthcare reform moves forward, and primary care providers will likely be needed to provide services to patients who were previously unable to obtain services.

Currently, the state of New York requires nurse practitioners to have a collaborative agreement in place with a physician. However, like many other states, legislation has been introduced to increase the scope of practice for nurse practitioners.

The mean annual salary for nurse practitioners in the state is $97,930 (BLS, 2012) with NPs in higher demand areas and in specialty practices increasing earning potential even more. The Nurse Practitioners Association of New York State advocates for the professional interests of the state's NPs, and is a great resource for you as you research your options for career advancement.
