Along with other advanced practice specialties, the demand for NPs in Maryland is on the rise. There is an increased demand for primary care services both because of an aging population and healthcare reform initiatives, which are moving healthcare into community settings rather than institutions.

NPs face unique challenges in Maryland. According to the Maryland Health Care Reform Coordinating Council Health Care Workforce Workgroup, low reimbursement rates prohibit many NPs from opening practices. A high cost of living in the state does not help matters. In addition, state practice regulations for NPs have been comparatively restrictive. Fortunately, there are initiatives in place to expand their roles. NPs are not the only MSN - prepared nurses in demand in Maryland.
