Nursing vacancies are on the rise in New York state hospitals in the wake of the 2009-10 economic downturn many hospitals reduced staff or froze hiring, according to a state workforce survey. Nearly 80 percent of responding hospitals anticipate hiring more nurses, with the highest demand reported in Long Island, northeastern New York, and New York City. The state ranks No. 3 nationally for employment of registered nurses with 169,710 RNs who earn an annual salary of about $74,000 according the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. A big emphasis is being put on increasing the number of nurses with a bachelor's degree or higher, according to the New York Board of Nursing.
New York has numerous colleges offering LPN to RN (ADN and BSN) programs throughout the state. They include:
Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing is a rural hospital-affiliated school that trains LPNs who have the option of continuing their education to become licensed RNs. The one-year LPN program offers 20 college credits for less than $10,000 and has graduated more than 1,600 nurses since 1956. LPN students receive 600 hours of clinical experience. LPN graduates can receive advanced placement to continue their education leading to an Associate in Applied Science degree with a major in nursing.
Crouse Hospital College of Nursing in Central New York offers a comprehensive, two-year associate degree program which includes classroom and clinical components. Program options include an LPN to RN track. Nearly 100 percent of Crouse graduates pass the RN licensure exam and find a nursing job within six months. About 87 students annually receive the associate degree, and nearly 100 percent of the graduates pass the RN licensure exam and find a nursing job within six months.
Monroe College in the Bronx district of New York City offers an associate degree "1+1" program, where students can complete their Practical Nursing program in the first year and their RN curriculum in the second year. LPNs may enter directly into the RN program, which focuses on trends in healthcare delivery. Classes are held in a modern facility that includes a Human Patient Simulation Center along with science and pharmacy laboratories.
