State Nurses Association: Missouri Nurses Association

Missouri RNs have many professional opportunities. Over 70,000 RNs are licensed and earn an annual mean salary of $59,000. Most work in hospitals in the larger metropolitan regions. Although Missouri has the nation's ninth strongest nursing workforce (1038 nurses per 100,000 people) a shortage still exists - primarily in rural areas.

In Missouri, LPN to ADN programs are a popular option, with several located in community colleges across the state. Some LPN to BSN programs are also available should you decide that you want to take full advantage of the opportunities afforded to BSNs. Almost all programs are campus-based and many have a partial online component. Distance-learning opportunities are available, but they still require some on-site training or clinical rotations.

Your employer may be able to help you pay for your education. In addition to federal aid, the Missouri Nursing Student Association has a list of available scholarships. Check out the Missouri State Board of Nursing, Missouri Nurses Association, and the Missouri Hospital Association for more information about RNs.

Schools to Consider

Maryville University of St. Louis (St. Louis MO). U.S. News & World Report lists Maryville as one of America's Best Colleges. The BSN program has a flexible schedule to accommodate your needs, and you may be awarded up to five credits for your work experience.

Cox College (Springfield, MO). Established in 1909 as the Burge Deaconess Training School for Nurses, Cox College focuses on nursing and other allied health professions. For LPNs in the ADN program, passing challenge exams will help them qualify for advanced placement. BSN students must also pass challenge exams and take classes required for a bachelor's degree.

Metropolitan Community College (Kansas City, MO). This one-year program offers flexible schedules, personal classes, and low tuition. Their unique Health Science Institute provides top-notch practical experience with state-of-the-art technology and simulations.
