Like quite a few other states, Georgia has an RN shortage that is expected to worsen in the near future. If you are an LPN who wants to expand your professional opportunities, consider joining the ranks of more than 65,000 working RNs in Georgia.

Georgia RNs have quite a few employment opportunities and earn roughly $61,000 per year, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Atlanta area has one of the highest levels of employment for RNs in the U.S. According to a report by the University System of Georgia, about 58 percent of RNs in the state work in hospitals.

LPN to RN programs around the state are making it easier than ever for LPNs to enter the workforce as RNs. LPN to ADN programs are more common, but some four-year colleges offer LPN to BSN options. You can usually get help paying for your tuition - many employers (hospitals in particular) offer tuition reimbursement, and information about scholarships can be found at the Georgia Nurses Foundation website. All colleges offer advice about obtaining federal loans and grants. For more information about being an RN, check out the Georgia Nurses Association and the Georgia Association of Nursing Students.

Some LPN to RN programs to consider:

Armstrong Atlantic State University (Savannah, GA). AASU offers an attractive campus close to the beach. Through testing, LPNs can receive credit for up to 22 credits of their BSN program.

Augusta State University (Augusta, GA). ASU interrupted academic studies to operate as a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Their LPN to ADN program is a joint effort with St. Joseph Hospital and was specifically created to meet the community's need for RNs.

Columbus Technical College (Columbus, GA). LPN to ADN candidates can train in CTC's new 78,000 square-foot health sciences center. LPNs must have work experience to be considered for advanced placement.
