Over 158,000 RNs work in Florida, with an average yearly salary of about $63,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In fact, the Gainesville area has one of the highest concentrations of RN jobs in the U.S.
RNs in Florida work mostly in hospitals (over 60 percent), home health (over 8 percent) and ambulatory care (5 percent). According to the Florida Center for Nursing, the future need for nurses is likely to be concentrated in hospitals and home care.
Florida LPNs who want to become RNs can find several LPN to ADN programs around the state. LPN to BSN programs are also available at some four-year institutions. If you work for a large hospital or health system, you can typically get some of your tuition reimbursed by your employer. You can search for scholarships at either the Florida Nursing Students Association website or that of the Florida Nurses Association, which also has a lot of other useful tips about how to finance your nursing education. More information about being an RN can be found at the Florida Board of Nursing.
