State Nursing Board: Alabama Board of Nursing

State Nurses Association: Alabama State Nurses Association

The Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) reports the state has 19,615 LPNs and 64,330 RNs, as of December, 2011. According to an ABN report, the majority of LPNs work in long-term care or nursing homes. Other areas with significant LPN employment include physician's offices, hospitals, insurance or drug companies, schools, and hospice. Nearly 91 percent of Alabama LPNs report being moderately or extremely satisfied with their positions.

Nearly nine out of ten Alabama LPNs worked in the healthcare industry prior to becoming licensed, many as nursing assistants or nursing aides, according to the ABN report. This may be an excellent time for Alabama LPNs to think about taking the next step and enrolling in an RN program. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing predicts that over 580,000 additional RNs will be required by 2018.

Programs to Consider

Wallace Community College (Selma). Wallace's LPN to RN Mobility Program offers an associate degree in nursing program. LPNs must have worked at least 500 clinical hours within the past 12 months to enroll. The program takes about three semesters for LPNs who meet the criteria needed to receive credit for past experience.

Calhoun Community College (Decatur). Calhoun offers LPNs the opportunity to obtain their Associate in Applied Science degrees in nursing in four semesters. Classroom time is one or two days a week, six hours per day. Clinical education takes place at area healthcare facilities each semester, and students must be willing to commute to hospitals in Northern Alabama.

Jefferson State Community College (Birmingham). Jefferson's LPN 2 RN Mobility program allows LPNs to enroll in the associate degree in nursing program if they have 500 hours of clinical experience over the past 12 months. The program may be completed in four semesters, but recent graduates may receive 12 credits for the first semester.
